Brannen's geniune passion for hockey ultimately persevered after returing to play after a broken jaw at the age of seventeen. After transcending from St. Francis Xavier University, Brannen showed star like qualities by becoming a CHL division champion for the Odessa Jackalopes in '05-'06. After success at the CHL level both Chris and current Ice Bear Mike Bulawka decided to skate away from the Rocky Mountain Rage and become SPHL champs in 2008-09.
What do you do during the off-season?
At my age I focus on staying healthy. The off-sesaon is an excellent time to mentally recharge. When I am away... I enjoy catching up with my buddies from Branson. I also enjoy working with the Mississauga Senators youth team. Mentally, I think it is rejuvenating to work with kids who are out there to just have fun. That's what hockey is all about. Having fun!
What is a typical day like for you during the season?
I usually get together with the team and practice in the mornings. Thereafter, I get on the bike and go. This helps build endurance. Otherwise, I think it is important to hang out with the team to build a comradery. A strong bond is important to build success.
What's your take on Craigen?
I am excited about the upcoming season with the guy. He is a great guy and more importantly he has a positive attitude. He puts the team first. I think he has all the qualities that makes a coach successful. I think he is a player's coach. He is a guy you can look to because he knows first-hand about the game. I think we can all look to him. Not just take orders from.
What do you think it takes to win?
The nature of hockey is different then let's say... football. In hockey you end one game and the next day your toughing out another. I think all successful hockey teams have fortitude. Also, having a close team is important. We have a core group of guys and Mikey is back.
Anything else that you want Ice Bear fans to know?
I am very excited about this upcoming season. We all have challenges to face. This year... it will be a different team. We are building a team. We no longer have a player like Kevin Swider to single handedly win you a game. Lastly, we are all working hard and hold a close knit together.
