County proclaims April 27, 2009 Knoxville Ice Bears Day

date: 04/27/2009

April 27, 2009 – Knox County and Mayor Mike R. Ragsdale proclaims today Knoxville Ice Bears Day in response to a resolution sponsored by Knox County Commissioner Mark Harmon to honor the Knoxville Ice Bears’ accomplishment of winning back-to-back championships.

The Knoxville Ice Bears have been a part of Knoxville County and the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) since 2002. The team has won four regular season titles and three championships in the past five seasons, and recently became the first team in the SPHL to defend the championship two years in a row.

Under direction of head coach Scott Hillman, the team compiled a regular season record of 35-16-9 during the 2008-2009 season. They secured first place in the SPHL and the William B. Coffey Trophy and went on to win the SPHL President’s Cup in post season play.

The resolution is to honor the team’s success and show how important the team is to Knox County, and it reads as follows:

WHEREAS: The Knoxville Ice Bears this month were awarded the President’s Cup for winning the Southern Professional League playoffs, and also hold the Coffey Trophy for the best regular season record; and

WHEREAS: This marks the second straight year the Ice bears have acquired both honors: and

WHEREAS: Three times in the past four years the Ice Bears have been champions of the SPHL; and

WHEREAS: The Ice Bears revealed their resolve when they rebounded from a 3 games to 2 deficit, and a one-goal deficit in the final period of the sixth game; and

WHEREAS: Knox County hereby congratulates the Knoxville Ice Bears for showing the grit and determination of true champions, and for the organization’s commitment to hockey excellence.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL R. RAGSDALE, KNOX COUNTY MAYOR, do hereby proclaim April 27, 2009 as Knoxville Ice Bears Day in Knox County, and urge all citizens to join in this observance.

Representatives of the team were publicly recognized today at 2:00 p.m. during the County Commission meeting.
