Knoxville, TN - Former Knoxville Ice Bears defenseman Paul Lynch, who was a member of the 2008 SPHL Championship team, has passed away unexpectedly.

"On behalf of the ownership, management, staff, and players of the Knoxville Ice Bears, we are all deeply saddened by the loss of Paul Lynch," said Ice Bears' President/General Manager Mike Murray. "Paul was valuable part of the Ice Bears 2008 SPHL Championship team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and the entire Lynch family."

Lynch was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in round #5 (#138 overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and played an integral part of the 2007-08 Knoxville Ice Bears SPHL Championship team.
His hockey career began at the University of Maine and included stints with the Johnstown Chiefs, Charlotte Checkers and the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, as well as a short run with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the SPHL.

Lynch scored 19 points (1 goal, 18 assists) in 46 games with the Ice Bears in 2007-08, and played all 8 playoffs games to help the team bring home its second SPHL championship to Knoxville. He played 8 games with Knoxville during the 2009-10 season before his contract was waived by the team. He chose to retire after being placed on waivers, but continued to call Knoxville home.
