Knoxville, TN – Knoxville hockey legends warmed up the ice for the Knoxville Ice Bears game tonight in the Civic Coliseum. 4,736 fans filled the stands to cheer on the Ice Bears as they skated against their SPHL rivals the Huntsville Havoc. A strong defense and great offensive effort from Eric Slais wasn’t enough to take a win against the Havoc, and the Ice Bears finished the game with a 3-1 loss.

Knoxville’s David Segal set the tone for an aggressive game dropping his gloves with Huntsville’s Ryan Hand 4:11 minutes into the first period.

A high stick nullified an early Havoc goal but with 1:25 left in the period, Huntsville’s Glenn Detulleo snuck the puck past Ice Bear’s goalie Bryan Hince for the first point of the game. The period ended with Huntsville leading 1-0.

Three minutes into the second period Huntsville made their lead 2-0 with a second goal by Detulleo. Eric Slais answered quickly with assistance from Captain Mike Bulawka and Jim Jensen grabbing the first goal for the Ice Bears.

Midway through the period Huntsville’s Ryan Kretzer shuffled the puck by Hince ending the second period with the Havoc leading 3-1.

A hostile third period didn’t propel the Ice Bears to victory but they never eased up on their opponents. Brett Valliquette was benched for the remainder of the game at the 2:22 minute mark of the period for charging when he obliterated Hand at center ice. The rivalry exploded at the end of the game beginning with Dan Buccella and Segal throwing down with the visiting Adam Knopp.

Martin Kubaliak and Hand finished the game with a powerful face off earning both players a game misconduct. Both teams skated a scoreless final period and the Huntsville Havoc will leave Knoxville with a 3-1 victory over the Ice Bears.

The Ice Bears will seek revenge on the Huntsville Havoc Thursday Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Civic Coliseum. Come out and enjoy a “Two”riffic Thursday featuring $2 beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), $2 popcorn and $2 hot dogs. UT students bring your UT-ID for $9 admission.
