Ice Bears at a Loss, but Ready to Start Season

Knoxville Ice Bears coach Mike Craigen watched Friday night’s exhibition game from the cheap seats in a top corner of the Civic Coliseum.

It probably didn’t matter where he sat.

The Ice Bears’ 7-4 loss to Columbus in front of 2,137 fans didn’t look very good from any angle.

“They scored a touchdown on us tonight,” Craigen said. “That’s not good.”

Knoxville opens the Southern Professional Hockey League season next Friday night against the Mississippi Surge.

“Any loss is disappointing, exhibition, regular season, playoff, you don’t like to lose,” Ice Bears defenseman Mark Van Vliet said. “That being said, we’re trying to get the team together here. Things I think are still going to come together and I feel like we’re looking good and I feel like we’re ahead of last year, and I’m excited for the season to get going now.”
