Ice Bears devastate Huntsville Havoc

date: 03/26/2010

The Knoxville Ice bears knew they had a lot riding on their last two regular season games. Winning both games would give them a good chance at securing home ice advantage in the first round of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) playoffs. In hopes of that, Knoxville made a strong showing first period.

Ice Bears’ forward Tim Vitek scored his 20th goal of the season less than a minute into the game. Kevin Swider, who is just five points behind the league’s leading scorer Rob Sich of Fayetteville, was credited with the assist. Huntsville’s Bill McCreary quickly answered back with a goal, evening the game at 1-1. Center Kyle Bochek has only been an Ice Bear for a short time, but he contributed a goal at 16:15 with the help of Bobby Joe Pelkey and Rich Zalewski. Zalewski was put back on the Ice Bears’ roster when defenseman Kevin Harris was put on the 30-day injured reserve list. Knoxville would score one more time in the first period on a power play goal by blueliner Mark Van Vliet. Van Vliet was named to the All-SPHL First Team today, along with Kevin Siwder.

The Knoxville Ice Bears were the first to score in the second period as well thanks to Jim Jensen. Bobby Joe Pelkey and Kevin Swider both picked up an assist, making it Swider’s third of the game. Former Ice Bear Mike Carter put the second point on the board for Huntsville at 9:28 in the second period. However, Havoc’s Vladimir Hartinger closed the gap even more with an unassisted goal. Ice Bear’s Tim Vitek scored his second goal of the night before a piece of glass fell and ended the second the period early.

Tim Vitek would go on to finish the night with four goals, the latter two in the third period. Bobby Joe Pelkey and Mark Van Vliet continued Knoxville’s scoring streak by adding two more goals. Kevin Swider set a new SPHL record for the most points scored in one game with seven assists. The previous record was six, which was held by several different players. The final score was 9-3 Knoxville. The Ice Bears will play their final regular season game at home tomorrow night versus the Fayetteville FireAntz.
