Knoxville, TN – Hoping to continue their home winning streak, the Knoxville Ice Bears hosted the Augusta RiverHawks at the Civic Coliseum on Tuesday night. The teams were 3-3 against each other this season going into tonight’s game. An intensely aggressive game and Augusta’s back-to-back goals in the first period left the Ice Bears with a 3-1 loss to the RiverHawks.

Rough play and penalties plagued both teams in pursuit of the win. Augusta grabbed the first points of the game with goals less than 1 minute apart in the first period. RiverHawks players Lucas LaBelle and Ryan Olidis brought Augusta to an early 2-0 lead.

The Ice Bears took advantage of a power play late in the second period and lit the lamp with a slap shot from Mike Tuomi with assistance from Mark Van Vliet and Frank Furdero.

The ice heated up when Knoxville’s Tyler Fletcher and Augusta’s Branden Kosolofsky threw down for a fight on the ice. Fletcher knocked Kosolofsky to the ice but the altercation continued. Both players were given 5 minute penalties for fighting and Fletcher earned two game misconducts and was sent to the showers early. The RiverHawks maintained their 2-1 lead going into the third.

An early fight between Knoxville’s David Segal and Augusta’s Lucas LaBelle set the stage for a hostile third period. The Ice Bears pressed for a tie, but Augusta sealed the fate of the game 18:57 minutes into the period when LaBelle hit one into an empty net, ending Knoxville’s home-win streak.

The Ice Bears will travel to Louisiana and Mississippi for three away games this weekend. The next home games will be Friday, January 7, and Saturday, January 8, 2011, for Back-to-School Night and Mascot Race Night. Knoxville faces off against the Louisiana IceGators both nights.

Mercedes-Benz 3 Stars of the Game:

2nd Star: Jon Olthuis (Augusta)
3rd Star: Egor Mironov (Augusta)
