Knoxville, TN – After losing to the Huntsville Havoc (15-8) in Alabama last Thursday, the Knoxville Ice Bears (10-12) were ready to seek revenge tonight on home ice in the Civic Coliseum. Knoxville’s Frank Furdero broke a tied game in the third period to lift the Ice Bears to their third straight win at home.
The first period set the stage for an aggressive game. Despite Knoxville outshooting Huntsville 17 - 6, both teams entered the locker room for the first intermission scoreless.
With just 3 minutes off the clock, Huntsville grabbed the first goal of the night when Mike MacDonald caught Knoxville goalie Andrew Gallant out of the net. Knoxville’s Mike Tuomi tied the game at 1 just 12 minutes later, scoring off a pass from Brett Valliquette and Rob Campbell. The second period ended tied at 1 with the Ice Bears leading in shots on goal 23-13.
The third period was crucial for both teams. Knoxville’s Emery Olauson broke the tie score with assistance from David Segal and Furdero. Huntsville’s goalie Mark Sibbald was still down from blocking a shot when Olauson launched the puck into the net lifting the Ice Bears to their first lead of the game at 2-1. Olauson has scored 6 points in the last 6 games. Less than 7minutes later, Huntsville tied the game at 2 when Omar Pacha bounced the puck past Gallant for a goal.
Furdero ended the possibility overtime with a game-winning goal at 17:38 into the third period. With assistance from Mark Van Vliet, the Ice Bears earned a 3-2 victory over the Huntsville, who are currently first in the league.
Join the Knoxville Ice Bears on Tuesday Dec. 28 for Health Care Night as the Ice Bears take on the Augusta RiverHawks. The world’s fastest golfer David “Ogie” Ogron will be returning to the ice during Tuesday’s game to attempt to break his newly set record of 58 golf balls hit in 30 seconds.
