Ice Bears Get Split in Columbus
date: 12/13/2009Columbus, GA - The Knoxville Ice Bears came from behind to score with the goalie pulled to tie to the game on a goal by Frank Furdero. The spunky forward then managed to win the game in overtime to seal the game for the Ice Bears. The game was mired by penalties where Knoxville was sent to the box 13 times for 51 minutes in penalties, giving the opportunistic Cottonmouths two power play goals on seven chances.
After taking the early lead on a goal by David Segal halfway through the first frame, Columbus pulled even just four minutes later on a goal by Tim Green. Seven minutes into the second period - Jesse Cole capitalized on a power play chance to put Columbus ahead. The lead was short lived when Kevin Harris gave Knoxville their only power play tally two minutes later.
The game was fraught with emotion as there were three fights in the second period.
Green put the Cottonmouths up at 9:20 mark of the third to put the Ice Bears on their heels. Knoxville fired 15 shots at Vigier and it was not until the Ice Bears pulled their goal for an extra attacker when Furdero was able to find the back of the net with just 71 seconds left in the game to force overtime.
Knoxville, who is known for the their late game heroics and tonight was no different. With the clock winding down and only 37 seconds left on the clock, Furdero notched his second goal of the evening by beating Vigier on the second shot of overtime.
Friday's night game saw the same score but the Ice Bears ended up on the losing end. Recent addition Taylor Hustead's two power play goals and assist on Kevin Swider's theird period marker was not enough to lift the defending champions past the stingy snakes.
