Ice Bears ground Ice Flyers in shootout

The Knoxville Ice Bears came out fighting as they faced the Pensacola Ice Flyers for the second time in as many days. After a tough loss last night, the Knoxville Ice Bears earn a hard-fought win in a shootout, 6-5.
Defenseman Travis Martell hit the ice swinging just 11 seconds into the first period, resulting in a major penalty and an ejection from the game. Forty-four seconds later, Bobby Joe Pelkey takes a penalty that allows Pensacola to score their first goal of the night. Another Ice Bears penalty, this time Chris Brannen, another Pensacola goal. Knoxville was finally able to find the net with goals from Mike Bulawka and Tim Vitek to end the first period tied at two.
The second period saw seven penalties and 11 shots on Ice Bears goalie Andrew Gallant. Pensacola scored eight minutes into the period and was able to take advantage of 5-on-3 play to make the score 4-2 at the end of the second.
The third period was action-packed with two penalty shots- one from each team, but only Pensacola was able to convert the opportunity. The Ice Bears rallied back with goals from Kevin Swider, Taylor Hustead and Tim Vitek. Vitek’s goal, his 7th of the season and second of the night, tied the game and sent us into overtime.
After five minutes of 3-on-3 play and no score, the game went into a shoot-out. Bobby Joe Pelkey scored the only goal, giving the Ice Bears their second win of the weekend and bringing their season record to 16-12-1.
