Ice Bears help raise money for Childrens Hospital

date: 02/12/2009

The first-place Ice Bears will show their support for this area’s children by hosting a Children's Hospital Night on Saturday, March 7 as they take on the Huntsville Havoc.

"This special night has grown out of our strong relationship with East Tennessee Children's Hospital," explained Ice Bears president Mike Murray. "Our players visit the hospital about 10 times a season and deliver teddy bears to patients. Everyone loves the visits, and it's truly humbling for our players.” The East Tennessee Children's Hospital is located in Knoxville and is a private, independent, not-for-profit pediatric medical center that has served the children of East Tennessee since 1937.

On the March 7th date, the Ice Bear players will wear specialty Children's Hospital jerseys. After the game, the jerseys will be auctioned off with the net proceeds benefitting Children's Hospital that will specifically help purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment such as home ventilators and APNEA monitors, used by patients receiving treatment from Children’s Hospital’s Home Health department. Children’s Hospital Home Health provides the opportunity for a patient to receive professional medical care in the comfort of his/her own home.

"The Ice Bears want to show their open support for the fantastic work being done at Children's Hospital," added Murray. “This is the first time that the Ice Bears have given all proceeds from a jersey auction to a non-profit group. When you realize how Children's Hospital impacts so many lives, you'll realize why the Ice Bears' commitment is so high."

Children's Hospital is the only medical center in East Tennessee devoted solely to children. Every element of the hospital's approach to healing is centered around both child and family.
