Augusta, GA - The road to an SPHL championship is a marathon - not a sprint. Sometimes during the race you take a nasty tumble. This is exactly what happened to the Knoxville Ice Bears (3-2) this evening, falling to the expansion Augusta Riverhawks (2-4) in a lopsided affair 9 -3 in Augusta.

The best thing Knoxville can do is get up, dust off and get back into the race. Tomorrow night in Knoxville will be that opportunity. The same two teams will meet up in Knoxville Friday night at 7:30 pm. With the shellacking suffered this evening, the Ice Bears will look to play like the championship team the organization is accustom to putting on the ice in recent years.

As one sided as the score shows, Knoxville's Mark Van Vliet scored first at the 1:10 mark of the first period and held a lead for a meager 25 seconds. At that point the flood gates opened for Augusta scoring four consecutive goals - Matt Auffrey - 1:35, Egor Mironov - 11:51, Chris Ferazzoli - 15:48 of the first period and Ed Snetsinger - 0:25 of the second.

Knoxville's all star defenseman and lone bright spot of the evening notched his second tally at the 3:18 of the second period keeping the score respectable at 4 -2. Then the second four goal barrage came from the Riverhawks - Auffery - 6:25, Mironov - 12:02, Lucas Labelle - 16:25, Jason Price 18:27 all in the second period.

Head coach Mike Craigen pulled his team together for the third. The two teams traded goals with Augusta's Neil Graham scoring their ninth and final goal at the 9:51 of the third. Knoxville battled to the end and used the third period as a building block for tomorrow's game by out shooting the home team 12 - 8 and scoring in the waning seconds of the period on Dallas Costanzo's tip-in goal at 19:28.

Knoxville is home Friday, November 5th to host Augusta Riverhawks at 7:30 pm and Saturday, November 6th vs. Columbus Cottonmouths at 7:30 pm.
