Ice Bears net three first period goals at Augusta, 5-3

Despite being outshot by 14, the Knoxville Ice Bears made good on a three-goal first period Thursday night to beat the Augusta RiverHawks,  5-3 in Augusta, Ga.

The Ice Bears (10-4) gained ground on the Southern Professional Hockey League-leading RiverHawks (11-3-1) in the standings.

Bryan Hince (10-1) made 37 saves in a game that saw 22 penalties for 58 minutes.

Steve Wiedler got the opening salvo going with a goal 1 minute, 46 seconds into the game.

After Augusta tied it 2½ minutes later on a power-play goal, Ricky Helmbrecht scored at 16:16 mark and Eric Slais tallied 23 seconds later to make it a 3-1 game.

Mark Van Vliet made it 4-1 on a power play 5:33 into the second period on an assist from Kevin Swider. Swider, who was named SPHL Player of the Month for October/November earlier Thursday, leads the league in points with 32.
