Knoxville, TN – A full bench, two newly signed players, the return of forward Eric Slais and impressive performance by goalie Bryan Hince were just what Knoxville needed to finish off the Louisiana IceGators in their second matchup in Knoxville this weekend in front of a crowd 3,721. Knoxville handed the IceGators their 16th consecutive loss, 4-2.
Newly signed Ice Bear Dan Buccella made a big difference on the ice in tonight’s game when the forward scuffled with Louisiana goalie Scott Darling in the second period and Marco Trevino had one assist, while Slais had one goal and two assists to end the night with a win that brings them to .500 on the season.
The Ice Bears scored first when Slais took a pass from Mike Tuomi and Trevino and slipped one past Darling. Knoxville outshot the IceGators 13-5.
Just 28 seconds into the second period, Knoxville’s David Segal and Louisiana’s Eric Tallent threw down their gloves and squared off, resulting in fighting penalties for both players. Coming off the energy of the showdown, Tuomi ripped one past Darling with help from Slais for a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later, Slais set the table for Mark Van Vliet who tapped the puck behind Darling to make it 3-0.
With 5 minutes left of second period play, Buccella engaged Darling after a collision in the crease, igniting a fight with the goalie. Tallent invited himself into the brawl resulting in a game misconduct and his removal from the remainder of the game.
At the end of the period, the IceGators saw their first point of the night from a shot by pugilist Dennis Sicard to breathe life into the IceGators, cutting into the Ice Bears lead 3-1.
At the half-way mark of the third period, Louisiana tightened the gap with a second goal by Sicard which was scored on the power play.
Mark Van Vliet was sent to the box for delay of game with 2:43 remaining in the game. IceGators pulled their goalie and tried to force a tying goal with 6-on-4 play. Hince answered from every angle and when the Ice Bears returned to full strength, Frank Furdero caught the puck from Segal and slid it down the ice for an open net goal.
The Ice Bears will return to home ice on Friday, January 21, at 7:30 for Legends Weekend. On Saturday January 22, come cheer on your favorite Knoxville hockey legends in a full, three period hockey game at 5 p.m. before the Ice Bears’ 7:30 puck drop.
