Ice Bear’s powerplay wrecks Havoc, 4-2

date: 11/11/2011

The Knoxville Ice Bears spent extra practice time working on special teams earlier this week, and it paid off Thursday night.

Kevin Swider scored two power-play goals in the third period and the Ice Bears beat Huntsville 4-2 in a Southern Professional Hockey League game before 2,234 fans at Civic Coliseum.

The Ice Bears were 2-of-4 on power-play chances, and the Havoc was 0-of-2.

“As a coach it’s really nice to see we didn’t give up a power-play goal,” Ice Bears coach Mike Craigen said. “Our penalty kill was great and to get the big power-play goals at the end to get the win was great.  That to me is the most encouraging part, is that we improved in the areas we needed to improve and we stayed consistent in the areas we were already doing pretty well in.”

Knoxville (5-2) is 4-0 at home this season. The Ice Bears have today off and play host to Columbus on Saturday night.

“We’ve got to protect home ice,” Swider said. “We’ve only played three road games and we’re under .500 (1-2). That’s below our goal.  We’ve got to take care of home ice and so far we have.”
