Knoxville, TN - For the first time this season the Knoxville Ice Bears skated against the No. 2 team in the SPHL, the Mississippi Surge. A solid performance in net and two goals just 30 seconds apart helped the Ice Bears end their three-game losing streak and earn those all important two points in the SPHL standings.
Knoxville (5-8) posted their first shut-out of the season when Ice Bear's goalie Andrew Gallant silenced Mississippi by turning away all 36 shots, demolishing the Surge's four-game winning streak.
Both teams saw a scoreless first period but it wasn't for lack of effort. Knoxville finished the period with only 5 shots to Mississippi's 13, but kept their defense tight and held Mississippi's leading scorer Rusty Masters to no shots on goal.
After a quiet first period, Knoxville lit the lamp 5:09 into the first period when Emery Olauson scored a power play goal off a pass from Mike Tuomi and Mark Van Vliet. Just 30 seconds later, Rob Campbell slapped the puck past former Ice Bear goalie Dan Earles for his first goal of the season, boosting the Ice Bear's lead 2-0. Campbell finished the play set up by David Segal and Eric Slais.
The challenge for the Ice Bears going into the third period was to keep up the energy from the first two periods. Knoxville exhibited relentless defense and refused to let the Surge have a shot at overtime.
Mississippi (9-3) pulled Earles at the 2 minute mark, but the extra skater wasn't enough to solve Gallant, giving the netminder an impressive 2-0 win over Mississippi.
Knoxville will face the Augusta RiverHawks at the Civic Coliseum on Friday at 7:30 p.m... Fans are encouraged to bring new stuffed animals for the annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are also invited to enjoy a free benefit concert following the game by 2008 Nashville Star winner Melissa Lawson.
