Ice Bears to play game six in Knoxville

date: 04/13/2009

April 13, 2009 - The Knoxville Ice Bears started the weekend strong with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Fayetteville FireAntz on Friday night in North Carolina. However, the FireAntz fought back to win games four and five. With those two victories, Fayetteville is leading the best-of-seven series 3-2. Game six of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) finals will take place in Knoxville on Wednesday, April 15.

The Knoxville Ice Bears started game three of the series with a 1-0 lead over the Fayetteville FireAntz on Friday night thanks to Ryan Moore unassisted goal in the first period. The FireAntz countered in the second with scores by Ruberto and Olauson. The one Knoxville goal of the second was scored by captain Swider. This would be the last point added to the board until 15:23 of the overtime period. After out shooting Fayetteville 8-6 in the third, Chris Rebernik sealed the victory in overtime with a goal assisted by Swider.

Game four, which was played on Saturday night, ended very differently for the Knoxville Ice Bears. While the shots on goals were almost even, Fayetteville was stronger on the power play. Three FireAntz’s players scored four goals, but Kevin Swider put up the only point for Knoxville.

With the series tied 2-2, Knoxville looked strong in the first period of game five on Sunday night. Frank Furdero got the puck past the Fayetteville goalie Guy St. Vincent 7:30 into the first period. That coupled with the four Fayetteville penalties, gave Knoxville fans hope that the Ice Bears could finish the weekend with two wins. However, the FireAntz reclaimed the momentum in the second with a power play goal by Lawne Snyder and then another goal by Rob Sich. The Ice Bears were plagued with nine penalties in the last two periods. Fayetteville hung on and won the game with a final score of 2-1, forcing game six in Knoxville.

The puck drops on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Fans can take advantage of two silver level tickets for only ten dollars. These tickets are available at the Coliseum box office, and all tickets are on sale now.
