Ice Bears win in front of sold-out crowd

date: 02/13/2010

The Knoxville Ice Bears wowed a sold-out crowd as they defeated the Huntsville Havoc 6-2, and Kevin Swider’s hat trick fueled the fire.

Knoxville’s Bobby Joe Pelkey and Kevin Swider scored 23 seconds apart in the first period, ending the period 2-0 Knoxville. The packed house of 5,134 fans cheered on 72 Weiner Dogs as they raced across the ice during first intermission. This fan-favorite event brought smiles to the faces of everyone in attendance.

The second period saw lots of action and hard hits, but just three penalties and two goals. Ice Bears Donald Melnyk scored the third goal of the night – his eleventh of the season – four minutes into the period. Former Ice Bear Mike Carter denied former Huntsville Havoc and new Ice Bears’ goalie Chad Collins a shut out when he scored 13 minutes into the second, ending the period 4-1 Knoxville.

Knoxville continued to dominate in the third with goals by Kevin Swider, his third of the night and 27th of the season. Forward Frank Furdero put the finishing touch on the game by scoring the last goal with about minute left in the game.

The Ice Bears extend their home winning streak to seven and earn valuable points in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings.
