Playing their second game in two nights, the Ice Bears looked poised to capitalize on the momentum from last night’s 6-3 win over the Fayetteville FireAntz. After dominating the first two periods, Knoxville succumbed to fatigue, allowing the Richmond Renegades to score two third-period goals to force overtime and dispatch of the Ice Bears with a 5-4 shootout victory, moving within eleven points of the first-place Ice Bears.

Derek Pallardy netted the first goal of the night, using a sweet side-swipe to beat Renegades’ goalie Mike Ronan. Chris Rebernik posted a power play goal for the Ice Bears, following two shots that ricocheted off the post, with 7:38 remaining in the period. Richmond’s Trevor Karasiewicz then scored his first goal of the night on a power play to narrow the Knoxville lead, 2-1.

Karasiewicz added a second goal on a 5-on-3 at the 13:30 mark, rocketing a shot from in front of the blue line to tie the game at two a piece. Three minutes later, Mike Carter found Tim Vitek with a pass through the crease to regain the Ice Bear lead. Bobby Joe Pelkey extended the lead following a scramble in front of the net, with Pelkey sliding the deflection past Ronan at 7:28 in the second period.

The third period saw a rejuvenated Renegade squad as Geoff Rollins single-handedly erased the deficit with a shorthanded goal at 13:19 and a full-strength goal at 8:03. During the third period, 21-year old Maryville resident Heather Chastain was crowned the 2009 Miss Ice Bear.

Following a scoreless overtime period, the shootout saw a back-and-forth battle, as Rebernik and Kevin Swider scored for Knoxville, but Rollins, Karasiewicz and Ryan Busby scored for Richmond. Ronan then stone-walled Kevin Harris to knotch the win for the visiting Renegades.

The Ice Bears host the Columbus Cottonmouths this Thursday at 7:30 PM.
