Knoxville Ice Bears heat up the FrieAntz

date: 02/20/2009

Mardi Gras festivities began in the Knoxville Civic Coliseum Friday night, the Ice Bears, playing their first game in six days, got off to a sluggish start in the first period. Faulty execution spoiled great centering passes and a few defensive lapses allowed the visiting Fayetteville FireAntz to jump to an early 2-0 lead.

Chris Leveille opened the scoring for the FireAntz, putting a Matt Moreland centering pass past goalie Ice Bears goalie Kirk Irving. The, with just seven seconds remaining in the first period, Dan Buccella connected with Brad Needham to put the FireAntz ahead at intermission.

The Ice Bears found their rhythm in the second period, exploding with four goals in eight minutes, easily erasing the two goal deficit. Mike Carter, Justin Keller, J.J. Wrobel and Chris Rebenik all found the back of the net before the clock reached the halfway point. With 6:29 left in the period, the FireAntz capitalized on the power play when Rob Sich netted the third Fayetteville goal to shrink the Ice Bears lead to 4-3.

Two minutes into the third, the FireAntz appeared to have the game tied, but the goal was not counted. Captain Kevin Swider then added an insurance goal to make the score 5-3. Mike Carter then took a pass from Brett Smith to end the game at 6-3.
