Mike Murray a 10 for Ice Bears

date: 10/20/2011

Mike Murray got a phone call some 20 years ago that changed his life.

Murray was a young hockey player from Kingston, Ontario, at the time, eager to make it big in his dream sport. His 1989-90 season in Germany was finished, and Murray was looking to play some more hockey.

One phone call led to another. Murray took a call from his agent, who told him the Knoxville Cherokees of the East Coast Hockey League needed a player for about 20 games to finish up the season.

Murray was the Cherokees’ answer — a 6-foot, 215-pound, high-scoring center, a guy who got a taste of the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers only a season earlier.

His agent told him more details. Interesting. Murray had one last question.

“Where is Knoxville?” he asked.

He soon found out. Murray almost led the Cherokees to the ECHL playoffs in 1990 — they missed by one game — but he found an even bigger prize off the ice.
