Rob Sich is an intriguing, maddening hockey player, and that’s true whether your a fan, a teammate, his coach or the opposition.
But Sichy’s shelf life as a pro hockey player could be on its last legs. On Wednesday, the Knoxville Ice Bears traded the two-time Southern Professional Hockey League’s MVP to the Mississippi RiverKings. No biggie - except that it’s his fourth team this year.
In early February, Sich was still a member of the Fayetteville FireAntz. He helped them earn the SPHL championship in the 2006-07 season, and in 2009-10, he set a league record with 63 goals. Five of those came on March 6, 2010, against Pensacola, tying the 2005 league mark set by the Antz’s Steve Roberts.
Few players in the history of the league can light it up like Sich when he’s dialed in. He’s the league’s career leader in goals (242), though with Knoxville bringing Kevin Swider (222 goals and a league-record 591 points) out of retirement, Sich’s mark could be in jeopardy…
