Tough Cuts: Ice Bears Release Kubaliak and Lee
date: 10/20/2011Defenseman Jozef Kubaliak and goalie Tommy Lee have been scratched from the Knoxville Ice Bears’ plans for the 2011-12 season.
Both were released from training camp as the Ice Bears continue to trim their roster for the Southern Professional Hockey League season opener Friday against the Mississippi Surge at Civic Coliseum. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Kubaliak, 28, played 30 games for the Ice Bears last season before sustaining a broken collarbone March 12 that ended his season. He also was released from training camp before last season due to a broken hand.
“It was a decision. It was a numbers game,” Ice Bears coach Mike Craigen said at Wednesday’s media day at Club LeConte. “Jozef’s a great guy, absolutely a great guy to have around. I hate that the injuries happened to him last year. I think it really stood in the way of him contributing to us, and if those injuries didn’t get in his way last year things might have been different this year.”
