Warriors’ Hince is truck stop treasure
date: 01/12/2012Exits along Interstate highways are rife with mega-store truck stops, offering truckers and other travelers things they may need while on the road.
The Greenville Road Warriors left on a six-game trip last month in need of a goaltender and picked up Bryan Hince in the early morning hours at a stop alongside I-40 near Knoxville, Tenn.
With Jason Missiaen and Nic Riopel both called up to the American Hockey League and only emergency backup John Nauta available, Road Warriors coach Dean Stork began working his contacts in search of a replacement.
He settled on Hince, who had a 16-1 record for the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League. With Knoxville on the route to Chicago—the trip opened with a game in Hoffman Estates, Ill.,—a 1:30 a.m. roadside pickup was planned. Departure was delayed, and it was closer to 3 a.m. when Hince got out of his parked car—which remained at the truck stop for 10 days before his roommates in Knoxville picked it up—and joined his new team.
